Intergenerational Music Adventure Sessions
2021
In 2021 during my time as Community Engagement Specialist at Mind&Melody, with grant funding from The Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative, we set out to design an adventure-based music program to serve schools in Liberty City remotely. The adventure sessions used music to teach children about space, travel and habitats. Through connections with South Florida Institute on Aging and guidance from community leaders, I activated a group of volunteers from the Foster Grandparent parent, together we facilitated 4 interactive music sessions to schools in Liberty City, creating an inter-generational experience through Zoom.
My role was to get the program going; solidifying partner schools, scheduling the programs, designing the lesson plans, writing the script for volunteers to follow, and leading the sessions. We had 2 training sessions with the volunteers where we worked together to assign parts and finalize the script for the lesson plans. Participants were engaged and the senior volunteers felt very special to be involved in the program. Through this their personalities and self expression flourished, some of them seeing it as a performance. I will never forget this program, I felt we were innovating and truly building a bridge between the generations and changing perspectives.
